Reaching milestones at the typical ages shows a child is developing as expected. As their child's first teacher, it is important for parents to be aware of these milestones and if they have a concern, schedule time to speak with their child's doctor.
Teachers of young children also need to have a deep understanding of child development. It helps them create appropriate and meaningful experiences for a child's learning as well as have honest and reasonable expectations of what a child care do. Because of its importance, the Southern Illinois Coalition for Children and families has designated January as Child Development Awareness Month.
