At the same time Coaliton members were launching early childhood systems efforts, in the region, another important collaboration was being launched throughout the region. Resilient Southern Illinois (SI) is a collaborative effort among area stakeholders which originally was brought forth as an educational initiative by the Southern Illinois PreK-20 Education Alliance. in response to the growing concern of K-12 teachers regarding the effect that trauma or experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) was having on their ability to learn and succeed in school.

Much like their K-12 counterparts early childhood educators were voicing similar concerns. about children's responses to trauma and stress. More children were presenting behavior problems and few resources were available to respond to them. in 2017 representatives from Child Care Resource and Referral and the Southern Illinois Coalition for Children and Families approached the leaders of Resilient SI , expressing their desire and commitment to expanding this work to include the Birtht o Five educaional community. and Resilient SI 2.0. . Access to community resources and supports is essential to meeting children's needs beyond the classroom.. Schools implementing a "whole child" approach need a "whole child" community.. Children's Cabinets are a mechanism to make that happen in a systemic and coordinated way. Children’s Cabinets bring together key leaders and sectors that serve children and youth. By bridging silos and driving collaborative action, a Children’s Cabinet aligns resources, closes programming gaps and reduces duplication, and prepares all children and young people to grow and thrive from birth to adulthood.
SICCF is working in partnership with Resilient SI to launch two Children's Cabinets in southern Illinois. The Carbondale Cabinet for Children and Youth, and the Johnson County Cabinet for Children and Youth were both launched in the Fall of 2022. with support from Harvard's Graduate School of Education Redesign.
This couldn't come at a better time as two Resilient SI School Districts were chosen to be among 12 districts nationwide to participate in Harvard's cohort of schools implementing Individualized Student Success Plans., a transformative pproach to guiding student learning . We are excited about the innovative collaborations that are happening across the region and the collective investment of so many partners in child and family success.
